It is soooooo quiet here. In the moments when the birds stop singing, you can hear the earth breathe.
Today has been almost Autumnal in the cold sunshine of mid winter. A freezing start to the day opened to a glorious afternoon, ripe for reading and gardening, and, indeed, washing windows. The magpies kept me company, as is their wont.
The late sunlight now pokes through the branches of the bay tree. The rainbow lorikeets hand upside down eating the berries from the huge tree in the garden. A topknot pigeon has a last bath in the birdbath, and the bees, busy all day on the lavender, have gone for the night. I have never before seen so many bees busy in winter.
As the earth quietens, as the sun lights the tan-red bark on the gum tree, I too quieten. I listen to the breath of the earth. I feel her strength and it permeates me. I smile, and touch the ground in gratitude.
